“What actually is MTD and how will does it effect me?”

MTD stands for Making Tax Digital and quite simply the HMRC are transforming their services to be completely digital.  This is a huge undertaking and is being done in stages with the first one being VAT returns which becomes effective from 1st April 2019.  Click here to read more about when the next stages are likely to be.

“Do all businesses have to register for MTD?”

No you don’t, but if your business is VAT registered and has a turnover above the VAT threshold of £85,000 per annum, you do have a legal requirement to submit your returns digitally from 1st April 2019.

Does my existing government gateway log in need to change?

“Can I submit my VAT returns digitally before April 2019?”

Yes you can submit them digitally now, however it becomes a legal requirement to do it digitally from 1st April 2019.

“How do I submit my tax returns digitally?”

It can only be done with compatible and approved HMRC software.  There are a number of versions around but MTD Bookkeepers use the most efficient and simplest to use for our clients.  All you need is access to a smart device (iPhone or iPad for example) and you are ready to go.

“So do MTD Bookkeepers just submit my tax returns?”

We prepare your books and records from the information scanned.  This is put in to a format suitable to prepare and submit your VAT return.  This information is also allocated in a way that allows you and your accountant to have ready available access to all your accounting entries, whether that be to see how much you spent on materials or whether your business owes you any money!
